About Richter's

90 Years on this corner 1935 – 2026

Dear Friends, Richter's Automotive stands proudly as one of the most enduring businesses in the Ridgewood area. The length of time we have known some of our customers can actually be measured in generations.

Richter's was established in 1935 by George Richter who aspired not only to provide thorough, affordable auto service but also to build customer relationships based on trust and confidence. The business that thrives today on South Maple Avenue in Ridgewood is a testament to his success in those pursuits.

In 1978 George Richter passed the shop to the next generation, who carried the same standard of pride-in-workmanship into the age of computer diagnostics. Richter's customers still know that personal attention is only a phone call away.

The Richter's legacy

Three generations on one corner

In 1926 a merchant seaman, Captain Phillip W. Reeves, built and opened "The Gasoline Station of Distinction." Nine years later George Richter took the lease.

George Richter takes over

At a dinner in his honor in 1965, eighteen former employees presented him with an engraved plaque. "Mr. Richter has been a major influence for good in our lives," a spokesman said.

The next generation

George Richter retires. Gasoline has not been sold here since 1988 — the shop became a Bosch Authorized Service Center in 1991 and joined AAA's Approved Auto Repair Program the same year.
